The respected journal 'Matrix, A Review for Printers and Bibliophiles' has been produced annually for more than 20 years by John and Rose Randall at the Whittington Press, England. The circulation of original issues is limited for practical reasons to around 800 copies and back issues are out of print. When a set appears on the market they sell at a high price, yet this material deserves to be more widely available. Ultimately, type and printing and the publishing of books are about the transmission of culture. Matrix participates in this ongoing conversation. In that spirit this handsome book is the first in a planned series of thematic publications containing selected articles from the historic collection of Matrix issues. The list of contributors reads like a who's who from the world of type and book arts and the subjects covered are both esoteric and entertaining. Individual typefaces figure prominently in these essays as do techniques of making type using both historical and contemporary means, along with discussions on the reasons for continuing to use now-obsolete technologies such as letterpress printing in the digital age. Book design, ornament design and non-Latin and mathematical typographic matters are among the many topics in these 35 articles covering centuries and continents.
